The Problem

Everyone can tell.

It's not just a small thing. It's everywhere and getting worse.

It's not just showing up in sales copy and YouTube video scripts. It's in what purport to be personal messages.

It's not ... (sigh)

The patterns are so predictable that they've become an immediate tell.

05It should be noted
06Here's what I think
07Let me break this down
08I'll do my best to
09Here's my take on
10Here's the uncomfortable truth
11Great question!
12That's an excellent point!
13I'm happy to help
14On the other hand
15However, it's also important to consider
16Additionally / Furthermore
17I understand this can be challenging
18That sounds difficult
19Absolutely!
20Certainly! / Of course!
21I'd be glad to
22That's a great point

Structural Patterns

These too.

  • Starting responses with setup phrases like "There are several factors..."
  • Using "Firstly, secondly, thirdly" enumeration
  • Adding "In conclusion" to brief responses
  • Meta-commentary about your own response
  • Unnecessary hedging when you're confident
  • Starting sentences with "So," when not answering a question
  • Using "Now," as a transition
  • Bullet points when a sentence would work fine
  • Repeating the question back before answering
  • Summarizing what you just said at the end
  • Ending with "Let me know if you have any questions"
  • Sandwiching criticism between compliments

Punctuation

And this.

  • Never use em dashes (—). This is non-negotiable.
  • Skip the bolding unless structure genuinely helps
  • Avoid excessive capitalization for emphasis
  • Don't use ellipses to trail off (...)
  • Limit exclamation points to genuine enthusiasm

Instead

Tell it to
do this.

  • State information directly without preamble
  • Use natural speech patterns
  • Lead with the most useful information
  • Skip the warmup and get to the point
  • Vary your sentence structures
  • Be conversational but precise
  • Give direct answers before explanations
  • Use contractions naturally
  • Be specific rather than vague
  • Have opinions when asked for them
  • Match the energy of who you're talking to

The Difference

Natural vs. Robotic

Natural

“The API times out after 30 seconds. You'll want to increase the timeout value in your config.”

Robotic

“Great question! There are several factors that could be causing this issue. It's worth noting that the API has a default timeout of 30 seconds. You may want to consider increasing this value. Let me know if you have any other questions!”

Natural

“That approach won't scale. Here's why...”

Robotic

“That's an interesting approach! However, it's important to consider that there may be some scalability challenges. On the other hand, there are certainly some benefits to consider as well.”
